New tribe for Outdoor Educators

I started a new tribe for Outdoor, Experiential, Environmental, and/or Adventure Educators. A place to share ideas and resources so we can do what we do even better. Anyone who works to get people outdoors and learning is invited. Or anyone who thinks this is a something they would like to do.

I am currently a Wilderness Instructor for Outward Bound Discovery. I have also worked for the Sierra Club, Student Conservation Association, and Sound Experience. I would love to connect with others from these organizations, but would also love to hear from some of you who have worked for others, so we can cross-pollinate (woo-hoo! lol).

Hey people
Just wondering what is happening out there on the West Coast of the USA or wherever y'all are, that I should know about. I am currently in Holland, staying with friends and juggling various projects. Considering returning to Maine sometime this fall, then maybe taking a trip out west. Life is Good. Glad this internet thing exists for uniting us souls dispersed across the continents.
So many ideas...Possibilities for networking and creating change, an end to apathy and despair, a friend from Texas told me in Italy, "Anarchy doesn't have to be angry, Anarchy can be, 'Yes, we can do it!'". Radical Re-education.
"Free Your MInd, and your ass will follow" -George Clinton.
I look forward to meeting you all.
Much Love

a short history and list of objectives

In 2000, I experienced a trial of thirst and pain blazing a trail on the Mountain of Death... which led to a vision and a divine opportunity that I want to share with you.

Contemplating death by dehydration on a pathless mountainous mess of thorn bushes, I bargained with the universe to let me live, promising to devote my life to creating a learning center that would teach appreciation for the simplest of things, such as clean drinking water, peace, freedom and friendship.

In 2002, I made a trail up the mountain of Death, lead five boys from the village of Roblito to the top and made a video doc of the adventure for them to enjoy. They lived close to the mountain, but nobody from the village had ever climbed it.

Seed, an art teacher from Louisiana, joined me and we taught art classes in Roblito. We picked up litter scattered around the village, juggled, walked tight rope, caught fish, took pictures and visited the beach. This was the first Action Hero Training Camp.

The next three steps:

#1. The Action Hero Network is a catalyst connecting people and resources for forming collective efforts to create community centers and common spaces.

#2. Action Hero Training Camp brings together talented and inspiring individuals to teach skills and get stoked on mission-focused educational adventures and environmental awareness.

#3. The Roblito Community Center for Cultural Exchange becomes a seasonal eco-village/retreat providing learning and leisure opportunities people of all income levels.

Until recently, I’ve called this project The FAR OUT School. Now I realize this title is too narrow. The FAR OUT School is a journey I’ve created for myself, where I am the principal and the student. I think of being in school as a state of mind, one of openness, curiosity, and exploration, so as long as I am seeking, I am in school. This is the quest I am on…. this is my question. I want to learn how do we make education more fun and purposeful.

The Action Hero Network vision is to promote self-directed learning through action and community involvement. It is the U of You. You get out of it… whatever you put into it. What’s the quest ya on …your question ...your mission?

I invite you to join me and other fun loving friends in Roblito this winter, between New Years and March break… to create your school! We’ll work on our Action Hero-self, wear capes and fuzzy clothes, develop our powers, meet peaceful people, play with kids, make art from trash, sleep in tree house hammocks like monkeys, spend very little money, find quiet places, sing and dance around a fire, swim in waves and water ski, and through all this… create at curriculum connecting natural cycles and community needs. This is the vision that gives me purpose.

I'll be leaving LA around Christmas, driving down to Roblito via Tucson. There is room in my car. Meggio will also drive her van down from San Francisco if there are enough passengers to pay for gas. Taking the bus to Roblito from Tucson costs $70. You can also fly into Mazatlan, and bus south for $10.

Details will continue to be posted at actionhero.tribe.net …. Please add to the thread if you are interested in joining us. Also see www.solomax.com/farout.html for past stories and photos from Roblito.

Please pass this on to others who may be interested.

Have fun and shine on!

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced plans to
launch an
outrageous new study in which participating low income families will
have
their children exposed to toxic pesticides over the course of two
years. For
taking part in these studies, each family will receive $970, a free
video
camera, a T-shirt, and a framed certificate of appreciation. The
study
entitled CHEERS (Children’s Environmental Exposure Research Study)
will
look at how chemicals can be ingested, inhaled or absorbed by
children
ranging from babies to 3 years old.

Please take a moment to follow this link and join tens of thousands
of
citizens in petitioning the EPA to terminate this study prior to its
proposed launch in early 2005.

Hey ya'll... SoloMAX here in Sacramento at Horse Cow, a Burner work/play/living space where I'll be teaching a Dragonfly Workshop tomorrow.

Allen, who invited me is working to make Horse Cow Arts into a school with gardens and more living quarters. His proposal can be read at: www.horsecow.com/Horse-Cow...s-Non-Profit/HorseCowArts.htm

In Oakland, there's also a new space called the Launch pad in progress... which has a tribe.net page...

As for The FAR OUT School... the project in Mexico, I've decided to rename it The Roblito Community Center for Cultural Exchange... so it will be more about the people of Roblito. Also, it needs to sound main stream, even though it will not be... cuz we don't want to limit who may be interested in supporting this effort.

After X-mas I'll be back down in Roblito, and I'm looking for peeps to join me. email max@solomax.com or call 818-331-9707

At this time, my focus is creating the Action Hero Network, something which much larger than a school. It's about empowering individuals to own their education and connecting cdommunities.

So... if you would please... join the Action Hero Network at www.actionhero.tribe.net and take part in building this community by sharing knowledge and making connections.

visit www.actionheronetwork.net and send links.

Dragonfly Workshop and Innerspace Travel Agent slideshow

Howdy ya'll... I'm in San Fran this week... after a groovy Love Parade and looking forward to the BM decom this weekend.

Tomorrow, oct 8th, I have two events set-up at Sacred Space on Haight and would love to have you come. Here are the details:

Join Cory Richardson, the Dragonfly Therapist, at Sacred Space healing and retreat center (776 Haight @ Scott) 1pm-5pm Friday for an afternoon of creative self-exploration in the garden. This work shop is $15 (materials included). Visit www.solomax.com/dlfys.html to see examples of the dragonlfies and call Cory if you have any questions 818-331-9707.

The dragonfly is symbolic of transformation. It spends the first two years of life under water as a nymph, bogged down in the bog, and looks nothing like the beautiful being it will become. Not until it has developed is it free to fly.

Before a person has a passion through which to focus energy, or a mission that provides a sense of purpose, they may find themselves feeling bored in school, working an unsatisfying job, struggling with an addiction or even locked in a cell. The problem is often not a lack of intelligence or physical ability, but simply not seeing a clear picture of their potential or believing they can attain it.

To gain a sense of direction and positive self-image, it is helpful to have a clear vision. Take time to view your inner landscape. Slow down. Be still. Gaze inward. Listen to your heart. Take stock of your values, interests, relationships, and skills both acquired and desired. What do you want to know? What do you love to do? What do you want your life to look like? How will you spread your wings and fly?

The Dragonfly Workshop is much more than an exercise that creates a beautiful art object, participants weave meaning into their creation and bead a spell that facilitates a journey of self-exploration resulting in a powerful symbolic reminder of one’s potential life path.

To help guide the participant on this inward journey, they will answer questions uncovering clues to their destination, read messages left by other travelers offering insightful views, pick up keys leading to exciting opportunities, and write journal entries to record their findings.

----

Also... later that night...

To learn a lot... go where you know nothing!

Be inspired and entertained... Join SoloMAX on an kayak journey from Vancouver to Central Mexico... through a mosaic of captivating images corresponding to music and poetic narration sharing experiences and insights focused on personal goal setting and environmental awareness. It's a trip!

9pm, friday. Admission free, donations please.
Sacred Space healing and retreat center, 776 haight st. @ Scott

Visit: www.solomax.com/slideshow.html

"Your world is only as big as you know. Open your mind by expanding the horizon. Step away from society’s noise and haste. Free yourself from cages of steel, concrete and glass. Go slow, get close, you’ll see more. Go FAR OUT into open spaces to gain a wider perspective."

Then afterward... join Anusha and friends for a Massage, Sauna and Hot Tub Party.
Come in and enjoy the gorgeous Garden Sauna two 15 min Massage samples
for only $25. The Hot Tub will also be available for $10 extra. The sauna is the nicest in San Francisco, it is both a wet and dry sauna
and is complete with internet streaming audio. The Hot Tub is probably
the only chemical Free ( Ozone, ionized copper and enzymes) Hot Tub in
San Francisco. Sun Charged Water and treats will be available.

I thought that you all should at least see this trailer and then go and see it in the cinamas.

http://www.fahrenheit911.com/trailer/

I posted it in all my other tribes too...I have an idea? All of you should post it in a few of your tribes also.Help to spread the word...call your local cinema and make a request for it to be shown. I heard they are going to try and block it from being shown nationwide. It is not sceduled for release until the June 25th...this is our own kind of magical way to show our patriotism...”Viva la revolutione!!!”

The organization Moveon.org is trying to get groups out to view the film opening day (June 25th) or at least by opening weekend.

For those who have not heard-several Republican funded groups have started contacting theaters set to show the film trying to convince theater managers to not show it. Showing support of these theaters and this film would be a great boost to get the films message to the masses.
Even if you do not agree with what the film says, I'm sure you also do not agree with a politial party trying to dictate what films are available for you to choose to see or not either.

From the moveon website-
Given how devastating Michael Moore's new film Fahrenheit 9/11 is to President Bush's carefully crafted facade, it's hardly surprising that right-wing groups who call Moore a "domestic enemy" are using censorship and intimidation tactics to try to get it pulled from theaters. That's why we've got to do everything we can to make the opening a huge success. We're asking people to pledge to see the film on the opening night -- Friday, June 25th. (If you can only make it on Saturday or Sunday, that's OK too.)

There is also a link to register to say you will come out and support the film opening weekend. I'm not going to post the link here, since it seems to 'cookie' the info of the last person who typed anything in. Also it may open up your mail box to political mail correspondance.
If you want to sign the petition, visit www.moveon.org/pac/news/f911.html

I'm in SW Utah touring treatment programs for "at-risk" youth. Utah has a ton of them because the laws here are different. In most other states, if I kid is 16, he or she has the right to check themselves out of the program. Here it might be 18. Within an hours drive there's at least 12 different programs.

Today I met with Danny Fountaine, the staff director for Red Cliffs Ascent, a wilderness program based out of Enterprise, and Sherman, son of the owner of Red Rock Canyon school, a residential treatment center in St. George. I interviewed them to understand what goes on in their operation, so I can figure out what opportunities exist for the FAR OUT School.

A kid in the Red Cliffs program cost parents $300 a day. These kids are out back packing-- there's no roof over their head or kitchen staff to pay for. It is the "tough love" approach. "We are not their friends," Danny assured me. It's a lot of outdoor survival skills-- like bow drill fires and tenting with just a tarp. They don't do much life planning or goal setting with the kids, and %60 go to another program after their 30 to 70 days in the wild with Red Cliffs is complete. Being out in the wild for 30 days, waking up at sunrise, doing journal writing, these are the best medicine, Danny said.

Most of the kids in these programs are from very wealthy families, and Sherman said many of the kids are there because their parents don't send enough time with them; and when they do spend time-- they often just go shopping.

Last Tuesday I did a slide show for the students and staff of the Sunhawk Academy, another residential treatment center in St. George, and I was set to do a Dragonfly Workshop there as well, but it was canceled because the staff didn't like that I said that "I choose to question authority" in my show. When I do the show, I'm just me-- I just give it to them straight. The Aspen corporation that owns Sunhawk owns a lot of treatment centers, and I don't know what the others are like, but that place was just a kiddy prison. The kids are only allowed outside 1 1/2 hours a day if they are good.

Kids are seeds. They need love, nutrition and sunshine. They need to be around positive people and a healthy environment. I didn't see that at the SunHawk. Kelly, the clinical director, she's cool. She's a climber, and we hit it off, but unfortunately she couldn't be there at the show. Bob, my only other connection at the school, he's a good man too, but he was not at the show either. What I saw was just a warehouse for kids.

It's bedtime for me now. I have a public slide show at Xetava Gardens tomorrow night, then headed down to do some work with youth near Tucson next week. The 23 to 25 is a Xara (Burning man type) bash near San Diego I'm gonna hit.
Check it: http://members.cox.net/xara-project/introduction.htm

Daniel, the guy I'm staying with here, who owns Xetava, is working on a project called Sacred Earth: www.xetava.com which will be interesting to watch unfold.

Do any of you have experience working with so called "at-risk" youth?

Other schools?

What are some other "schools", learning centers or intentional communities like what I'm talking about?

Nols and Outward Bound are not quite it, but even if you know about schools like these, please add them to the list.

In mexico I know of a retreat center where you can do work trade: http://www.mardejade.com/

Twin Towers on Stone Island is not a school, but it's a cool traveler hangout, and I learned a lot living there: http://anycities.com/ttowers/index.html#TOP

In Costa Rica there's two:

In Ojai, Cali I stayed at the Full Circle Farm: http://www.solomax.com/oct.24.3.html

My friend Peg is now living at: http://www.earthaven.org/

Gathering x-mas holidays?

Who is intrested in gathering on the FAR OUT land in Mexico next x-mas holidays?

It would be a two week thing. We'd be traveling around the area too, not just staying on the land. It would be rad to take a motorboat trip down to Mexcalititlan, through the estuary. Look at the map in the FAR OUT photo album, and check out the pic of Mexcalititlan... the island in the shape of the Aztec Calender. Those are boats in the "streets" -like venice. We could also go to copper Canyon and visit the huichol people in Tepic, which you can see here:

http://www.solomax.com/feb.28.3.html
http://www.solomax.com/mar.1.3.html

To get there on Grey Hound from anywhere in the US will cost less than $200. It's only $60 from tucson to Mazatlan, then the land is two hour south from there. From NYC it would take three days.

Who is interested?

What Now?

Near the end of James and the Giant Peach, James had an inspiring dialogue with his two witchy, evil aunts, who were his captors before he set off on his voyage across the Atlantic on the giant peach. The scene takes place on the street at the foot of the Empire State Building with a police officer and a large croud watching...

Skinny aunt: The poor boy needs his medicine... so we will just have to take him.

Fat aunt: ...And the peach!

Skinny aunt: Back to our cozy little house on the hill. Come along. You’re going home with us.

James: No I’m not!

Skinny aunt: What did you say?

James: I said, "No - I’m - Not!" I hate that house and that cold room. And how I was always hungry.

Skinny aunt: Alright! That’s enough!

James: And how you beat me!

Fat aunt: He’s lying!

James: And telling me I was nothing.

Skinny aunt: Shut up! Shut Up!

James: No. Not this time! I flew a giant peach across the ocean. I landed on top of the tallest building in the world. I made it. I’m not the one who is nothing--- you are! And I’m never going back with you.

Skinny aunt: This is something he dreamed up!

James: Well... maybe it started that way ....as a dream, but doesn’t everything-- those buildings, these lights-- this whole city? Somebody had to dream about it first. And maybe that’s what I did. I dreamed about coming here, but then I did it!

The FAR OUT School started a dream, a seed of potential, which floated on the ocean to Mexico where it found fertile soil.

Now I'm forming a company focused on improving life styles, which includes spending more time with friends and family, meeting new friends and lovers, using time and energy more creatively, developing practical skills such as building housing, growing food and making clothing, improving health through nutrition and recreational exercise, and knowing what it is to truly be free.

I'm a co-operative person. I rather work and play with my friends, sharing life together in community, living in tents, then a slave to the city working hard to pay rent. However, I know we can make lots of money and have a blast; we just need to be organized.

I have many skills, and a lot of knowledge, but there are some things I'm not good at, such as law and accounting, so I'm looking for others to take those roles. We'll need others to help with building cob houses and gardening.

And this is not about me and my thing in Mexico. It's about global change-- putting earth first and creating a network to share information and inspiration. Let's hook people up!

The FAR OUT School is a mission, a project that will take a team of action heroes to accomplish. What I'm really trying to form here is the ACTION HERO NETWORK. My intention for this tribe is to form a circle of bright people, and we'll all feed each other information and hook-up for many different projects that have nothing to do with the FAR OUT School. When there's a certain task or event that needs an action hero, put it up on the discussion board.

The FAR OUT School needs a clear objective for you to visualize and see your part in it. What I have in mind is a summer camp-like gathering on the land in Mexico next Christmas. It's a good time to be there because of climate and lots of people could get the time off from work.

Between now and then we need to get a non-profit status in the US and Canada (which will cost $1000 each), write as many grants as possible (critique them using our combined wisdom) and find clients in the school system and corporate world who would enjoy participating and paying to be part of this rare cultural exchange.

I'll continue clarifying the vision as time goes on, but what I'd like now is to have ACTION HERO NETWORK members list their super powers in their profile, and put up on the discussion board what they could offer this FAR OUT Project-- ideas, grants, other groups, web sites, anything.

This is a seed in the germination stage, and it will take a lot of watering, but everything starts somewhere. You my friends are awesome people, I'm happy to have ya'll in this tribe, and we can do whatever we want if we can get organized. With this land and this networking tool, we all have an opportunity to make something beautiful, empowering and freeing. You’ll get out of it whatever you put into it.

Lets rock!

Membership fee?

We need to raise funds to incorporate and get a non-profit status. I'm thinking a membership fee would help, but not sure how much. $10... $20.
It could be like paying a camping fee a head of time. Even if you can't make it this winter, you'll support it so it will be rockin' sooner than later. With a fee, you're invested in it and may be more keen to contribute other forms of support as well.

Any thoughts on this?
