Near the end of James and the Giant Peach, James had an inspiring dialogue with his two witchy, evil aunts, who were his captors before he set off on his voyage across the Atlantic on the giant peach. The scene takes place on the street at the foot of the Empire State Building with a police officer and a large croud watching...
Skinny aunt: The poor boy needs his medicine... so we will just have to take him.
Fat aunt: ...And the peach!
Skinny aunt: Back to our cozy little house on the hill. Come along. You’re going home with us.
James: No I’m not!
Skinny aunt: What did you say?
James: I said, "No - I’m - Not!" I hate that house and that cold room. And how I was always hungry.
Skinny aunt: Alright! That’s enough!
James: And how you beat me!
Fat aunt: He’s lying!
James: And telling me I was nothing.
Skinny aunt: Shut up! Shut Up!
James: No. Not this time! I flew a giant peach across the ocean. I landed on top of the tallest building in the world. I made it. I’m not the one who is nothing--- you are! And I’m never going back with you.
Skinny aunt: This is something he dreamed up!
James: Well... maybe it started that way ....as a dream, but doesn’t everything-- those buildings, these lights-- this whole city? Somebody had to dream about it first. And maybe that’s what I did. I dreamed about coming here, but then I did it!
The FAR OUT School started a dream, a seed of potential, which floated on the ocean to Mexico where it found fertile soil.
Now I'm forming a company focused on improving life styles, which includes spending more time with friends and family, meeting new friends and lovers, using time and energy more creatively, developing practical skills such as building housing, growing food and making clothing, improving health through nutrition and recreational exercise, and knowing what it is to truly be free.
I'm a co-operative person. I rather work and play with my friends, sharing life together in community, living in tents, then a slave to the city working hard to pay rent. However, I know we can make lots of money and have a blast; we just need to be organized.
I have many skills, and a lot of knowledge, but there are some things I'm not good at, such as law and accounting, so I'm looking for others to take those roles. We'll need others to help with building cob houses and gardening.
And this is not about me and my thing in Mexico. It's about global change-- putting earth first and creating a network to share information and inspiration. Let's hook people up!
The FAR OUT School is a mission, a project that will take a team of action heroes to accomplish. What I'm really trying to form here is the ACTION HERO NETWORK. My intention for this tribe is to form a circle of bright people, and we'll all feed each other information and hook-up for many different projects that have nothing to do with the FAR OUT School. When there's a certain task or event that needs an action hero, put it up on the discussion board.
The FAR OUT School needs a clear objective for you to visualize and see your part in it. What I have in mind is a summer camp-like gathering on the land in Mexico next Christmas. It's a good time to be there because of climate and lots of people could get the time off from work.
Between now and then we need to get a non-profit status in the US and Canada (which will cost $1000 each), write as many grants as possible (critique them using our combined wisdom) and find clients in the school system and corporate world who would enjoy participating and paying to be part of this rare cultural exchange.
I'll continue clarifying the vision as time goes on, but what I'd like now is to have ACTION HERO NETWORK members list their super powers in their profile, and put up on the discussion board what they could offer this FAR OUT Project-- ideas, grants, other groups, web sites, anything.
This is a seed in the germination stage, and it will take a lot of watering, but everything starts somewhere. You my friends are awesome people, I'm happy to have ya'll in this tribe, and we can do whatever we want if we can get organized. With this land and this networking tool, we all have an opportunity to make something beautiful, empowering and freeing. You’ll get out of it whatever you put into it.
Lets rock!

Re: What Now?
Sun, March 14, 2004 - 12:31 PMBosque... Your web site looks great and I'm sure we can work together. The land near Roblito is about the size of a football field, and it is owned by a family I live with when in Roblito. They are fishermen with no desire to use the land, and would sell it. They are stoked to have me do something with it. Bernardo, the man who owned it, now dead, gave me permission to use the land to create a school. Really, the school is the whole area... the mountains, ocean, and estuary between. The land will be used to build housing and gardens, and that will start as soon as we get organized. Gotta get offline, but will fil you in on the rest soon.

Re: What Now?
Wed, March 17, 2004 - 11:54 AMJust got back from a night and day on Mt. lemmon, camped out in my hammock... like the scene I have in mind for on the Mt. of death. I was up there with friends shooting a short film, as a back drop for their band while on stage. they started with a sunrise, then shot Jilly dressed as a alein princess with blus hair, combat boots and red tutu... walking a day long, so it seemed, with no sound.
As director of this "School" ...it's like I'm the dircetor of a movie. I have scenes in my head and bad-ass actors(you my friends-- truely action heros) and I gotta organized the time amd place and funding to bring them together. I need to inspire you to see this vision for yourself, so you will see yourself in that scene and take on that role-- whatever you choose.
I'm a go-with-the-flow kinda person, very spontanious in the moment, yet I have a focused direction. I don't know how I'll get there exactly, but one step at a time, it's gonna unfold as it should.
The gathering date I have in mind is next Winter holidays. It would be a two-week to month long thing. All we need is tents.... and it doesn't rain usually at that time of the year, so we don't even need tents.
From Tucson it costs $60usd to get to Maxatlan on the bus(one day), and the FAR OUT Land is one hour on bus from there, then an hour by boat or car. Stone Island, across the harbor from Mazatlan is awesome as well, and you may want to trip up on the train to the copper canyon from Los Mochis. It's only $12 each way and staying at Casas Margeritas in Creel is $5 which includes breakfast and supper. There's hot springs and hikes in the area that will blow your mind.
So, as for this gathering, it will be an orientation, and a chance for us to meet and see what I'm talking about. After it's done, I'll continue on my kayak trip south to Nicaragua. I tried to make this happen last year and the year before, but just wasn't ready. I didn't have the people in place, and most of all I didn't really want the responsiblity. But now is the time to take action and have faith it's gonna be right. Shit happens, but nothing happens if we live in fear.
When I'm done the kayalk trip, the FAR OUT School will be full time. I see it as a summer camp in the winter-- an action hero training camp. I see school groups, spring break kids, families and travelers... as I've said before.
So what now? we need a clear mission statement, a board of directors, cash to get the non-profit status.
I'm thinking a membership of $20 might work. I'm open to others ways if you have ideas. I've asked a friend I trust to collect the money and keep an account. I just asked her today and have not heard back yet. I gotta take my sister's kids to the doctor now, so I'm off. What do you think would be a good membership fee? Who wants to be on the board? As for the mission, I've spelled it out here and on my page: www.solomax.com/farout.html ...but it needs to be boiled down. No matter what we say it will evolve. Most importantly... this is about getting people together and being creative, then sharing what we learn through media or touring as a troupe, or leading tours.
So far in this tribe we have writers, teachers, artists, environmentalists, adventurers, ...and we could do crazy shit with just us. One of the ladies, her mother's job is investigating non-profits to make sure they are for real, and she is willing to give advice on setting up the non-profit, so that's a great start. I have a lawyer friend, but he still needs to be paid to do the work. Christa has a book on how to start a non-profit, so that might help. Anyone else? What are some others schools or centers we can look at for advice and ideas? Start a discussion topic listing them.
